As the school year comes to a close, students from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute’s advanced placement capstone program will be graduating at the end of the month.<\/p>\n

Although this past year has been very difficult for students across the province, these students have continued to excel academically. <\/p>\n

Daniel McIntyre is the first school in Manitoba to offer this one-of-a-kind AP capstone program, which aims to provide post-secondary level education in a high school setting. The program consists of two parts: an AP seminar portion which students complete in Grade 11 and an AP research portion, which is completed in Grade 12.<\/p>\n

In AP seminars, students get to choose the topics they’d like to learn about such as medicine, environmental science, education, political studies, sociology and more. While learning about these topics, they also learn critical academic writing and research skills.<\/p>\n

These skills are then used in the AP research portion, where they conduct a research project of their own design to address a gap in the current literature\/field. This year, student projects explored topics such as the effects of climate change on elm trees in Winnipeg, the cultural impact of residential schools on survivors’ diets, Muslim students struggles at school during Ramadan and much more.<\/p>\n

The project on Ramadan actually led to Daniel McIntyre establishing a prayer room which will help Muslim students pray at school. The AP students also helped set up this room by painting a mural on the walls, for example.<\/p>\n

The program is led by Benjamin Paul, who received one of Canada’s highest honours in education in 2019 when he received a certificate of excellence from the Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence — one of only nine other recipients from around the country!<\/p>\n

The AP program is especially beneficial for students as the credits they receive can be transferred to universities across Canada and the U.S. Unlike university courses, the AP capstone program is also free, meaning that students can get credits that are equivalent to a $500 or more university course.<\/p>\n

Once again I’d like to congratulate the AP capstone program graduates and all other high school graduates for their achievements and to wish them well in the future.<\/p>\n
