Shola Agboola is the Conservative Party of Canada’s candidate for Saint Boniface–Saint Vital in the Sept. 20 federal election.<\/p>\n

The married father-of-three, who lives in Royalwood, has worked as a corrections officer for the provincial government for more than 14 years. He has a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Manitoba, and has published academic and policy papers on topics such as immigration, women’s rights, social justice and political participation.<\/p>\n

Agboola is also the founder of the Shola Agboola Goodwill Ambassador Foundation. Earlier this year, the organization collaborated with the Indian Association of Manitoba and International Hope Canada to send a container of medical supplies and equipment to India, which were used to help with the nation’s fight against COVID-19. As well, Agboola is in his second term as president of the Nigerian Association for Young Adults, Canada.<\/p>\n

When asked why he’s running in the upcoming election, Agboola said he wants to give back to the country that became his home when he immigrated here in 2003.<\/p>\n

“It’s because of my love for this country,” Agboola told The Lance<\/em> recently.<\/p>\n

“As I’ve said before, I believe this country has given me and my family so much, so it’s my obligation to give back to the society that’s given me so much hope and motivation. I’ve always been motivated to give back.”<\/p>\n

In terms of his priorities if elected, Agboola said they include COVID-19 recovery, and ensuring the emotional, psychological and economic health of individuals, families and communities as the province slowly begins to recover from an unprecedented year-and-a-half.<\/p>\n

“If I’m elected, I have to be the voice of the community. A good thing I like about the Conservative Party of Canada is its recovery plan. I was involved in the consultation process of the plan at the local level, so (I) know about the needs of my community directly,” Agboola said.<\/p>\n

“The mental health of so many people has been severely affected, and we can’t ignore the psychological and emotional welfare of our citizens who have been struggling and having a tough time. We need to be able to get them the help they need.”<\/p>\n

Agboola said he brings a varied skill set to the table, which includes an innovative approach to problem solving and strong interpersonal skills. Working with numerous individuals and organizations in his community and with his foundation, Agboola has become proficient in networking, too.<\/p>\n

“Through the years, I’ve developed strong leadership skills, and I’m a leader in my community. I have the ability to bring people together, and I have the ability to listen to people. The foundation is where my humanity comes from. Also, I believe that before you become a leader, you have to have a feeling of empathy of others. I’ve been inspired to do this because of my country.”<\/p>\n

At press time, Jane MacDiarmid (PPC), Laurent Poliquin (Green), incumbent Dan Vandal (Liberal), and Meghan Waters (NDP) were among the other candidates registered in Boniface–Saint Vital.<\/p>
