Once the motion to address traffic safety was approved, there were several discussions with the traffic engineering department to decide which treatment would be most effective in mitigating safety concerns.

          <img src="https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/our-communities/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2022/04/e-col-chambers-nov3.jpg?w=1000" alt="Supplied photo
Coun. Markus Chambers (Seine River-St. Norbert), at left, and Coun. Matt Allard (St. Boniface) turn on a new pedestrian half-signal on St. Anne's Road.

There are essentially four types of pedestrian corridor treatments that have been used in the City of Winnipegm including fround-mounted signs, rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFB), pedestrian corridors (overhead flashing beacons) or half- or full-signal lights. The decision to use a half-signal took into consideration the two full-signal lights at the intersections directly north and south of this crossing and the importance of maintaining the flow of traffic during peak hours.

The pedestrian half-signal will stay green until activated by a pedestrian/cyclist wishing to cross the intersection. Once depressed, the light will turn amber, alerting oncoming motorists to slow down in anticipation of a red light. Once the light turns red, pedestrians will be able to cross safely and see a countdown indicating how much time they have to cross. Once they have crossed, the overhead lights will turn green.

Residents of Vic Wyatt House and Seine River Retirement Centre attended the official activation of the pedestrian hal- signal and were ecstatic to be among the first users. Coun. Brian Mayes (St. Vital) initially worked to get the crosswalk installed, but increased traffic volumes warranted this added safety treatment.

There are additional locations throughout the St. Norbert-Seine River Ward that will require additional traffic engineering treatments to improve safety outcomes.

We must however, recognize that safety is everyone’s responsibility as we share our roadways. Pedestrians and cyclists should always be mindful of traffic in both directions when crossing busy intersections. Motorists must not be distracted while driving and recognize that vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians all share our roadways. Working together, we can reduce accidents and improve safety outcomes for all.
<div
