This year\u2019s session was the organization\u2019s 100th but all proceedings were held online, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.\n\n\n\nThe opening ceremonies for the 97th annual Winter Session of The Youth Parliament of Manitoba featured the 170 St James royal Canadian air cadets honour guard in the Manitoba Legislative Building chambers Wednesday December 26, 2018.<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\nWhile Youth Parliament holds a variety of events, its keystone event is its winter session. This session for these future leaders is a week-long model parliament over the winter break. From Boxing Day to New Year’s Eve, participants debate a variety of mock legislation hey have created from topics about which they are so passionate.<\/p>\n
Manitoba’s Youth Parliament is run entirely by its impressive young members. As speaker of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly, I have the privilege of hosting their keystone event annually.<\/p>\n
Young members take their seats in our chamber and learn the ins and outs of parliamentary procedure. Participants hold titles such as premier, speaker, and minister of various portfolios. Former politicians are invited to participate, giving these young future politicians an opportunity to learn from people who have held these roles.<\/p>\n
2021 was a special year for the Youth Parliament of Manitoba. This was the 100th annual session— a remarkable milestone. Just think of the thousands of Manitoba youth who have participated in this organization and honed their debating skills over the years. The lessons learned in this program are will stay with each participant everywhere they go in life.<\/p>\n
Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, these young parliamentarians participated in a virtual event this year. In-person attendees will be welcomed again when it is safer for all participants.<\/p>\n
Year after year, I hear from youth parliament participants about how much fun they have had and how excited they are to return the next year, sometimes serving on the executive.<\/p>\n
