Another connector is Crescentwood resident Michael Thiessen, who averages 100 kilometres daily picking up food from community minded stores. CHU is most grateful for the managers at Costco, Sobeys, IGA, FreshCo, Cobs Bakery, Olive Gardens and Canada Life Centre, to name just some of the organizations who understand that hunger day is every day for many in Winnipeg.<\/p>\n
Their donations allow CHU to feed those served by groups such as Urban Wagons, the Elizabeth Fry Society, Indigenous Family Centre, Bear Clan Patrol, Rossbrook House and Andrews Family Centre, all of which witness hunger daily. CHU also prepares meals for 150 unsheltered people three times day at N’Dinawemak – Our Relatives Place (190 Disraeli Fwy.)<\/p>\n
It is most timely that the international theme for Hunger Day 2024 was “Thriving Mothers”, with a focus on maternal and child health. The UN estimates that 60 per cent of people living in hunger are women, and it is fitting that this year’s winner of the Mayor’s Volunteer Service award, Carina Blumgrund, is a mother and grandmother who exemplifies what a caring community is all about. Not only does she deliver meals, she organizes the Caring Kits Project, whereby folks can donate outerwear and hygiene products for her to distribute to our most vulnerable.<\/p>\n
In rewriting the social script on food insecurity, Bobier believes “we can eradicate food hunger in Winnipeg.”<\/p>\n
CHU driver Thiessen gives food for thought in saying, “be kind, we’re all brothers and sisters.”<\/p>
