A city councillor says he wants to hit the city hall gym, but his workout will have to wait until the province opens the doors to all gyms and fitness centres.
Coun. Shawn Nason (Transcona) said on Tuesday that while the Body@Work Wellness Centre has been open throughout the 10-week code red period, when other fitness centres in the province are forced to stay closed, he won't be there.
"This gym has been open to members at city hall for some time under code red," Nason said. "I'm disappointed in myself for being so distracted with the business at city hall to have not raised the issue sooner than when I became aware (Tuesday) that the city was not covered under the blanket rules assigned by the province.
"We should respect the provincial orders and align ourselves with so many that have had to shutter their businesses due to this unprecedented time... My plan for 2021 is to make use of this facility, but I’m resisting until public gyms and fitness are allowed."
When asked about the gym during Tuesday's news conference, Dr. Brent Roussin, the chief provincial public health officer, said while other gyms and fitness centres have been ordered to remain closed, the city facility isn't breaking the COVID-19 public health orders.
"Our public health orders… don't apply to federal, provincial or municipal governments," Roussin said.
