Former city councillor Marty Morantz has ousted Liberal MP Doug Eyolfson and reclaimed the riding of Charleswood-St.James-Assiniboia-Headingley for the Conservative Party of Canada.
“What an incredible, incredible night ... I may be speechless for the first time in my life,” said MP-elect Morantz to applause at his campaign headquarters.
“I’m looking forward to spending the next number of years ... trying to bring some common sense back to Ottawa.”
By deadline Monday night, Morantz had collected more than 17,000 votes with poll results still pouring in.

What is the biggest issue facing your community, and how would you address it?
The biggest issue in this riding is affordability of living. Financial empowerment is vital. Lower taxes for every individual earning less than $100 000. No federal tax on the lowest income earners or pentioners. Focused government investments in people and our communities. The best investment that government can make is leaving more money in people’s pockets! Why did you decide to run in this election?
To help create a country where every individual has the opportunity to reach their full potential as a human being.Tell us something about yourself that voters might find surprising.
My dad was born in South East Asia. He was displaced for most of his first 18 years. This was due to two historic events. First, the Japanese Imperial Army Invasion of allied nations. My dad’s family lost all their worldly possessions but far worse, granddad was used, tortured and forced as slave labour in the jungles of Burma to build a railway. In the 1950’s, granddad was fighting a communist insurgency in Malaya. Dad was sent 6000 miles away for his own safety to boarding school. He recalls during his brief visits to his mom and dad during that time hearing the RAF aerial bombings of communist positions. Dad eventually came to Canada by ship without a nickel to start a new life in Canada alone. He became a professional engineer. Met and married (51 years as of Oct.4) my mom in Canada and moved to Brazil. This is why I spent the first five years of my life in Brazil, raised in Rio, first language was Portuguese.

What is the biggest issue facing your community, and how would you address it?
I understand that there are many growing concerns in the Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia-Headingly riding and hearing some concerns about the growing aging population and housing issues, one way where both could be addressed is by having a seniors co-op sharing with university students. This would help with not only the growing issues of affordable housing but help provide companionship. With the seniors co-op sharing this provides a great opportunity where students can not only learn, but both can enjoy a cut on rent. Why did you decide to run in this election?
I decided to run as I wanted to be able to vote for a candidate that would be 100% pro life and stand for traditional marriage as well as other biblical principles, and wanted to give others a chance to be able to vote for the same thing. I ran so Jesus is a choice and so that He could have dominion from sea to sea, from rivers to the end of the earth.Tell us something about yourself that voters might find surprising.
I was diagnosed with mental health issues by the age of 15 but had been struggling for years with depression and anxiety. I was in and out of psych wards, crisis stabilization units and foster care due to trauma that I had gone through in my early years. I was kicked out of school and didn’t finish until I was almost 21 years old. But it was Jesus that changed all that. He healed me and set me free! He took away my pain and the entire trauma I experienced away. He gave me HOPE when I had nothing left. I have got a clean bill of health and have been free from all thoughts of suicide and self-harm! Jesus is so good!

What is the biggest issue facing your community, and how would you address it?
Affordability. We are witnessing a shrinking middle class, soaring housing and rental costs, stagnant wages, and increasing debt loads. This leaves Canadians making difficult financial decisions every day. The influence of the top 1% in Ottawa is the cause, and its effects hurt everyone else. If we want different results, we must find the courage to make a different choice, and that is the New Democrats. Why did you decide to run in this election?
Despite Canada’s wealth and prosperity, so many are struggling. Our party's proposals, like universal pharmacare and dental care, will bring huge relief to many. This is why I am proud to be a New Democrat, for our policies and platform are designed to give a hand up, so we all rise up. I absolutely love to debate and speak to large audiences. I am a strong lobbyist and advocate for the vulnerable and marginalized. I wish to bring these skills to Ottawa, to collaborate beyond political partisanship to create and legislate real, long term solutions to the many issues Canadians face.Tell us something about yourself that voters might find surprising.
Our Campaign nicknamed me "Captain Enthusiasm" because I get so excited about our party, our leader Jagmeet, and the prospect of real action of change. When I said that I liked it, they threatened to make me go canvassing in tights and a cape.

What is the biggest issue facing your community, and how would you address it?
While connecting with residents at the door and through casework, I have continuously heard that health care is a major concern. To improve the Canadian health care system,I am focused on helping to implement a Universal Pharmacare Program and setting national standards for access to mental health services. I would also collaborate with municipal and provincial governments to expand community-based addiction services in the fight against the methamphetamine crisis. Why did you decide to run in this election?
I ran to become a Member of Parliament in 2015 because I wanted to make a difference for our community and the many Canadians who rely on our health care system. During my medical career, I cared for too many patients that had to make the impossible decision between paying for their medications or putting food on the table. I’m running for re-election as the Member of Parliament because I believe I can continue to bring real progress and real results to our community, including helping to implement a Universal Pharmacare Program.Tell us something about yourself that voters might find surprising.
I’m a dedicated long distance runner and have completed twenty-two marathons. I’m also a huge Star Trek and Monty Python fan. I also like to ride my Triumph Bonneville motorcycle around Winnipeg and Manitoba.
