Wawanesa school closed after Souris floods crawl space

Officials have closed the Wawanesa school after water seeped into the building's crawl space, Water Stewardship Minister Christine Melnick said today.

Inspectors are now checking the building's integrity, she said.

Flooding on the Souris River, which is now at crest, is the source of the water in the school's basement area.

Melnick also said more families from the RM of Ritchot south of Winnipeg and St-Lazare to the west have been displaced because of flooded out roads.

She said 1,984 Manitobans are currently out of their homes due to spring flooding.

Most of those are from Roseau River First Nation south of Winnipeg and Peguis First Nation on the Fisher River north-west of the city.
