Comedic duo James & Jamesy (aka Aaron Malkin and Alastair Knowles) have returned to Winnipeg fringe, but have left their tea party behind in favour of something a little darker. As the title suggests, James & Jamesy In the Dark is performed mostly in the dark, with only two chairs on stage and a lamp-like hat on each actor’s head to work with.
As it turns out, that’s enough to keep an audience engaged and roaring with laughter for much of the 75-minute comedy, though the first third of the piece — filled with a lot of nonsensical, Cirque du Soleil-like gibberish — did move quite slowly.
Malkin and Knowles are extremely talented at executing detailed physical comedy (even in the dark) and manoeuvring through hilarious improvised interactions with the crowd, and managed to keep the laughs coming even when the actors themselves couldn’t be seen.
