Alberta’s Melanie Gall returns with a production that’s as fun for adults as it is for kids of all ages — especially those who aspire to belt out a tune or two of their own.
Tommy and Tilly Mouse live in an old can of peas in the wall when Tilly sneaks over to listen to opera music coming from outside their small living space. Enraptured by the songs (primarily from Gianni Schicci and Carmen), she works on her singing skills daily before sneaking off to opera school, where she’s not allowed to partake in lessons (because the humans will shriek in fear) — until, that is, the ostrich that teaches the class calls in sick for a performance and Tilly is thrust into the spotlight.
Gall’s great vocal chops are on display throughout this 40-minute solo show — well, solo if you don’t count the three puppets on a stage that’s virtually otherwise empty. She’s incredibly charming, working wonders with the puppets and keeping the crowd engaged and involved throughout the production with her humour and wit. Young and old stomped, sang and cheered along, with a few willing audience members invited on to the stage. Fun for all ages.
From the Fringe program:
Tilly Mouse lives under an opera house and dreams of performing onstage. But when anybody sees her, they scream and run away. With determination, imagination and help from her friends, Tilly proves that even a mouse can be a star! Featuring music from Carmen and Gianni Schicchi. Performed around the world - from Scotland to Sudan - including two Off-Broadway runs!
