Have you ever wondered how Peter Pan and Captain Hook first came to Neverland, and what caused the legendary rivalry between them? That’s the basis for the 75-minute comedy produced by Winnipeg’s Theatre Dance Company.
It’s an ambitious attempt at a challenging script, which is performed in the style of Gilbert and Sullivan to mediocre effect. The witty dialogue is a treat and the thirteen-member youthful cast tries to do it justice, but can’t quite reach its potential. In particular, much of the text felt rushed and a heavy use of accents meant some lines got garbled. Many of the characters were also not given the chance to explore their full comedic potential due to scenes running at breakneck speed.
The choreography is missing the energy you’d expect from this source material, but nevertheless succeeds in entertaining with an engaging new twist on a classic story.
