"You can't possibly do this job and be a good person."
Anna, played by Christina Heather, has a bachelor's degree but finds herself stuck in the retail world as a sales associate.
She hates it. She wants to quit. She loathes the snobby suburbanites, creepy dudes and all manner of vulgar shoppers who make her life a living hell. But she also encounters occasional warm-heartedness from people who seem, just for an instant, to make it all worthwhile.
The balance of the characters, including Anna's store manager, are depicted by Johanna Burdon, who lends Sold Out both its levity and cringes — cringes the audience readily identifies with their own, previous experiences in retail or, if they're honest with themselves, behaviour as shoppers.
Heather's expressiveness is a particular highlight of the performance, which portrays readily identifiable moments of frustration, anger, hopelessness and, ultimately, resolve.
