A young prince secludes himself in his castle as he mourns the mysterious disappearance of his father three years earlier. Could a local woman, rumoured to be a witch, be somehow involved?
At 45 minutes, this could be a good introduction to theatrical conventions for children: The story is partly narrated and partly sung by one actor, who portrays all the characters and changes wigs and costumes in full view. Meanwhile, an onstage keyboardist provides musical interludes and background music. And of course there was audience participation, with no shortage of volunteers to come onstage. This became a mixed blessing, however, when there were too many participants for the actor to fully engage.
The main quibble I had was the decision to change the narration from the live actor to a voice-over at the most "deep" part of the story. While the play can be commended for not shying away from bittersweet elements, the attention levels dropped noticeably at this point.
