Fringe Fest mainstay Jem Rolls returns to Winnipeg with a historical biography of Lise Meitner, a German physicist who was key to the discovery of nuclear fission in uranium but never got her due. The Walk in the Snow shines a light on the contributions of women in science and calls into question the importance of academic awards such as the Nobel Prize.
Rolls is a charismatic and engaging performance poet from England who presents a well-researched tale that is packed to the brim with characters — it’s a good idea to grab a copy of the program because it can be difficult to keep everyone straight.
Gestures and simple lighting help make distinctions between scenes, but 60 minutes doesn’t feel like enough time to tell the 90-year story in as much detail as Rolls attempts.
