Synchronized swimmers or contemporary dancers? It’s hard to draw a line between the two in Water, a 45-minute feat of physicality presented by Edmonton’s Viva Dance Company.
The eight featured dancers do not stop moving from the time the stage lights rise to the final bow. Through writhing movements and masterful falls, they successfully create the illusion of waves crashing, streams flowing and hurricanes making landfall. Save for a few missed connections, the performance is a polished piece of modern dance that includes some impressive acrobatics and no less than three costume changes — all pulled off seamlessly.
The show is directed by Stephanie Lillley and uses narration, music, lighting and video to add to the overarching theme of the power of water, but it’s the dancers who ultimately tell the story.
