National rookie of the year Raya Surinx supplied 21 kills and a career-high eight service aces to lead the Manitoba Bisons to a 24-26, 25-20, 16-25, 25-22, 15-10 quarter-final upset of the No. 3-seeded Mount Royal Cougars at the U Sports women’s volleyball championship in Vancouver Friday night.

Manitoba setter Katreena Bentley registered 42 assists and 12 digs while Haley Roe led Mount Royal with 24 kills.

Ella Gray added a season-high 14 kills for the sixth-seeded Bisons, who will face the No. 7 UBC Thunderbirds in semifinal action Saturday.

The Thunderbirds upended the No. 2-seeded Brock Badgers earlier Friday.
