Birdie rampage earns Sainz Players Cup crown

Hey there, time traveller!

WINNIPEG — Carlos Sainz Jr. exploded for four birdies in the final six holes and snatched his first PGA Tour Canada victory from a pack of hopefuls this afternoon at The Players Cup.

Sainz shot four-under-par 68 and posted 17-under 271 to edge third-round leader Nathan Tyler by a single shot.

Sainz rocketed out of a pack of six players sharing the lead midway through the afternoon.

Tyler had a 60-foot birdie putt at the 72nd hole to force a playoff, but came up a foot to the left.

The $27,000 first prize brings Sainz to fourth spot on the PGA Tour Canada’s money list, a major move considering the top-five players on that list at the end of the season earn automatic graduations to the Tour.

Finishing in a tie for third were two Canadians, Kent Eger of Saskatoon and Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont. Each was at 14-under 274.

From the money list after The Players Cup, B.C.’s Riley Wheeldon, South Dakota’s Will Collins and Ohio’s Stephen Gangluff will be the three invitees to the RBC Canadian Open this week at Glen Abbey in Oakville, Ont.
