Keenan Brown led Team Manitoba into the opening ceremonies at the 2015 Canada Winter Games, so it was fitting the 21-year-old Winnipegger would pick up the province’s first medal in Prince George, B.C.
And it was a gold medal, no less.
Brown won the archery compound — individual male category – on Tuesday afternoon. He beat Tommy Plante of Quebec 145-144 in the final to put Manitoba on the medal board at the games, which started last Friday and run to March 1.
Brown was the flag bearer for Team Manitoba, which sent nearly 300 athletes, coaches and support staff to the games this year.
Brown, a biology student at the University of Manitoba, has competed in archery for nine years and is already considered one of the country’s best. He is currently ranked fourth in Canada across all age groups, and is a former world junior champion (2011).
He won a bronze in archery (for competitors under the age of 22) at the 2011 Canada Games.
