A silver medal in the women’s triple jump and a countback in the women’s pole vault gave Team Manitoba a medal standing of one gold, one silver and three bronze after the first day of the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games on Saturday.

Manitoba trails B.C. (9-5-4), Alberta (5-5-7) and Saskatchewan (1-5-4).

Amanda Gundrum, from Swan Lake, leaped 11.17 metres in the triple jump, finishing behind British Columbia’s Aisha Klippenstein, who leapt 11.53, and in front of Danielle Parrish of Alberta with 11.16.

Also from Manitoba, Courtney Van De Kerckhove was fifth (10.96), and Mallory Walters was ninth (10.26).

In the women’s pole vault, Alexandra Allen and Sarah Boila, both from Manitoba, tied for bronze with a height of 3.40 meters. Saskatchewan’s Courtney Erickson also jumped that high, but after a countback of misses, Allen and Boila, still tied, were each awarded a bronze medal.

Sam Vincent of Winnipeg won the gold medal in the 1,500 metres in four minutes 01.3 seconds.

Manitoba’s other bronze medal was won by Tyler Mislawchuk, in the men’s sprint triathlon competition, with a time of 1:03.21.
