LEDUC, Alta. — Skip Karsten Sturmay’s Alberta team defeated the University of Winnipeg’s J.T. Ryan 6-4 in the men’s gold-medal match at the U Sports Curling Championships Wednesday afternoon.
On Tuesday, Ryan and his team of third Kyle Doering, second Ty Dilello and lead Rob Gordon defeated Waterloo’s John Willsey 5-4 in semifinal action. Earlier in the day, Winnipeg’s 6-2 win over Regina earned the Wesmen the fourth and final playoff spot with a 4-3 round-robin record.
Sturman, with lead Christopher Kennedy, second Jason Ginter and third Tristan Steinke, were seeded second in the playoffs after posting a 5-2 record during the round robin. Alberta advanced to the final with a 9-3 semifinal win Tuesday over the University of New Brunswick.
Meanwhile, Alberta also captured the women’s crown with the Selena Sturmay team’s 6-3 victory over Thompson Rivers.
