An NFL star, a popular Bisons coach and an Olympian are among the nine new inductees to the Manitoba High School Sports Hall of Fame.
On Tuesday, the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association unveiled the athletes and builders who will be formally inducted into its 2015 Hall of Fame Class at a luncheon on May 23.
Athletes entering the hall include record-setting track star and 1992 Olympian Byron Goodwin of Grant Park High School; Dakota College volleyball star Scott Koskie, who played for the Canadian national team between 1995 and 2008; and Glenlawn grad and current Dakota principal Jill Mathez, who was a volleyball and basketball MVP in 1981.
Also being inducted is Linda Puttaert (nee James), a Dakota grad who dominated the provincial track scene in the late 1960s; Westwood Collegiate grad Joey Vickery, who went on to play for the Canadian national basketball team and a pro career in Europe; and last but not least, Brandon’s Vincent Massey High School grad Israel Idonije, who discovered football in high school and is currently a free agent after 11 years in the NFL.

The High School Sports Hall of Fame will also induct three builders to its ranks, including current University of Manitoba Bisons football head coach and former Churchill High School sideline boss Brian Dobie; 30-year Westwood Collegiate basketball coaching legend Dave Guss; and Duane Whyte, who has spent 36 years building basketball in the Swan River area, taking the Swan Valley varsity boys to multiple provincial championships.
The Hall will also honour the Sisler High School 1958 and 1960 provincial champion basketball teams: the earlier team was coached by hoops legend Vic Pruden, while the 1960 team featured a young player by the name of Gary Filmon.
