MINNEAPOLIS — Nothing says ‘Welcome Back to the NHL, Winnipeg’ quite like this: the Montreal Canadiens on opening night.
True North confirmed early Wednesday evening Winnipeg’s new NHL squad will christen its 2011-12 regular season at the MTS Centre on Sunday, Oct. 9, 4 p.m., against the most-storied franchise in hockey — Le Bleu, Blanc et Rouge, winners of 24 Stanley Cups.
Interestingly, the last NHL game played in Winnipeg — April 28, 1996 — also featured one of the Original Six, as the Jets fell 4-1 to the Detroit Red Wings in a playoff game.
The NHL will release the full 2011-12 regular-season schedule this afternoon, with the docket of exhibition games to be unveiled earlier in the day.
Winnipeg has inherited the seven-game exhibition schedule from the Atlanta Thrashers, which includes a pre-season contest against the Ottawa Senators on Monday, Sept. 26 in Conception Bay South, N.L, which was reported by The Free Press in early June.
