MONTREAL — Ryan White said confidence was the key to his late-season success with the Montreal Canadiens and the club provided him with another boost to his confidence Wednesday when they handed him a one-way contract for the coming season.
“That was my goal for the off-season and I’m happy that I got it,” White said on a conference call from his home in Brandon. The one-year deal is worth US$625,000.
On paper, White is taking a cut in pay. His NHL salary last season was $635,000 and a series of bonuses boosted his cap hit to $850,000. But he had a two-way contract and, for more than half the season, he was earning $62,500 with the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs.
Jackets’ Huselius hurt
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Blue Jackets will be without winger Kristian Huselius for at least the first six weeks of next season, general manager Scott Howson said on Wednesday.
Huselius tore his pectoral muscle while bench-pressing in Sweden last week, according to the Columbus Dispatch, and will require surgery later this week. The recovery time is estimated to be four to six months.
Cheechoo back with Blues
ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Blues have signed free agent forward Jonathan Cheechoo to a one-year contract.
The 30-year-old from Moose Factory, Ont., last played in the NHL with the Ottawa Senators in 2009-10. After scoring just five times in 61 games that season, Cheechoo was shipped to the AHL.
Hurricanes keep Sutter
RALEIGH, N.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes got an important piece of their future under contract on Wednesday, agreeing to terms on a three-year deal with forward Brandon Sutter.
The US$6.2-million deal carries a salary-cap hit of just under $2.1 million per year. Sutter will earn $1.5 million next year, followed by $2 million in the middle season and $2.7 million in the final year of the deal.
Sens ink top draft pick
OTTAWA — The Ottawa Senators have signed Mika Zibanejad to a three-year, entry-level contract.
The Swedish forward was Ottawa’s first pick (sixth overall) in the NHL entry draft last month.
The 18-year-old centre played his first season of pro hockey with Djurgardens of the Swedish Elite League this past season. Zibanejad had five goals and four assists in 26 games.
