Auston Matthews, Wayne Simmonds and Joe Thornton scored for the Toronto Maple Leafs, while Mark Scheifele and Andrew Copp replied for the Winnipeg Jets during a wide-open first period.

Matthews opened the scoring just 27 seconds into the game, and Simmonds gave the visitors a 2-0 lead at 1:18.

Scheifele cut the deficit in half at 3:19, and Copp tied the game at 10:26.

But Thornton put Toronto back in front at 11:59, chasing Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck from the game after giving up three goals on six shots.

Backup Laurent Brossoit took over in net.

Shots are 14-12 for Winnipeg through 20 minutes.
