Big picture

It's September hockey, so the temptation is to take a step back and dub this as meaningless. After all, it counted not in the standings and featured a lineup with a pile of players bound for St. John's. But that's missing the point, as well as being more than a tad cynical.

Winnipeg Jets Mark Scheifele celebrates his first period goal against the Columbus Blue Jackets during NHL preseason action Tuesday night in Winnipeg.

This was a special evening and if it's any indication of what Oct. 9th might be like, then opening night against the Montreal Canadiens will be absolutely magical.

Little picture

The Jets who suited up here in Winnipeg did exactly what they were supposed to do: energize the home fans and muddy who goes where on the depth chart. Some steady work by a number of players means some juicy storylines are developing in the fight for jobs.

Game-breaker

Jets are leading 2-1 in the second when first-round draft pick Mark Scheifele feeds a seeing-eye-pass to Kevin Clark that the Winnipeg product tips behind Curtis Sanford.

★ Mark Scheifele, C, Winnipeg —Hey, what’s not to like? He may be greener than St. Paddy’s Day in Dublin, but he’s got game.

★★ Dustin Byfuglien, D, Winnipeg — Dropped ’em inside the first minute and set a tone. The big man is large and in charge.

★★★ Paul Postma, D, Winnipeg — Scored the first goal and drew an assist on another. One of the team’s top D-man prospects.
