Jets D-man Flood likely off to Russia

LITTLE-USED unrestricted free agent Mark Flood has opted not to return to the Winnipeg Jets.

The NHL team said Sunday Flood is likely headed for the KHL's Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. The deal isn't believed to be final yet but could be as early as today.

Winnipeg's seventh and sometimes eighth defenceman last season got into 33 NHL games one season after playing a major role for the AHL's Manitoba Moose.

Flood, 27, scored three goals and seven points in limited use on most nights when he did crack the lineup, mostly due to injuries.

After the season, the Jets had said they had some interest in Flood's return, but clearly not enough to keep him in Winnipeg.

After signing prospect Paul Postma less than two weeks ago, the Jets have seven defenceman on one-way contracts worth $19.4 million for next season. They also have depth players Derek Meech and Zach Redmond on two-way contracts and many believe either could step into the lineup and contribute in the coming season.
