SHAWINIGAN, Que. – Alexis D’Aoust scored a tiebreaking goal 17:40 into the second period and the Shawinigan Cataractes rallied to edge the Sherbrooke Phoenix 3-2 on Saturday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoff action.
The victory evens their first-round playoff series at a game apiece.
Dmytro Timashov had a goal and an assist for Shawinigan, which lost the first game of the series Friday night. Dennis Yan had the other Cataractes goal while Danny Moynihan and Cavan Fitzgerald had two assists apiece.
Guillaume Gauthier scored twice to give the Phoenix an early 2-0 lead.
Philippe Cadorette made 30 saves for the win. Evan Fitzpatrick stopped 39 shots in the losing effort.
OLYMPIQUES 2 REMPARTS 1
GATINEAU, Que. — Alexandre Alain scored the go-ahead goal 12:32 into the third period as the Olympiques won Game 2 to take a 2-0 lead over Quebec in their first-round playoff series.
Tristan Elie also scored for Gatineau while Mathieu Bellemare earned the win by turning aside just 10 shots.
Remparts captain Bronson Beaton opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 28 seconds into the second period. Evgeny Kiselev stopped 49 of the 51 shots he faced in defeat.
ARMADA 4 FOREURS 1
VAL-D’OR, Que. — Philippe Sanche had two goals and two assists as Blainville-Boisbriand evened its first-round series with a win over the Foreurs in Game 2.
Jan Dufek and Guillaume Beaudoin each scored once and set up another for the Armada, who dropped the first game of the series on Friday night.
Olivier Galipeau had the lone goal for Val-d’Or at 8:27 of the third period.
WILDCATS 6 TIGRES 5 (OT)
MONCTON, N.B. — Vaclav Karabacek scored his second of the game 18:23 into overtime as the Wildcats slipped past Victoriaville to go up 2-0 in their best-of-seven first-round playoff series.
Zack MacEwen scored twice for Moncton, including the tying goal with less than four minutes left in the third period. Kelly Klima and Manuel Wiederer had the other goals.
Mathieu Ayotte, Maxime Comtois and Mario Huber had a goal and an assist apiece for the Tigres. Pascal Laberge and Marc Beckstead supplied the rest of the offence.
HUSKIES 6 VOLTIGEURS 0
ROUYN-NORANDA, Que. — Anthony-John Greer struck twice and Timo Meier and Francis Perron had a goal and two assists apiece as the Huskies downed Drummondville to take a 2-0 lead in their first-round series.
Julien Nantel and Anthony Wojcik also scored for top-seeded Rouyn-Noranda and Chase Marchand stopped 18 shots for the shutout.
The Voltiguers, who fell 10-0 to the Huskies in Game 1 on Friday night, have yet to score a goal this playoffs. Tristan Berube stopped 21 shots in the losing effort.
SCREAMING EAGLES 5 SAGUENEENS 2
SYDNEY, N.S. — Evgeny Svechnikov and Michael Joly had a goal and an assist apiece as the Screaming Eagles downed Chicoutimi to even their first-round series at 1-1.
Duncan MacIntyre, Yannik Bertrand and Massimo Carozza also scored for Cape Breton, which dropped Game 1 on Friday night.
Landon Schiller and Dmitry Zhukenov scored for the Sagueneens.
Chicoutimi’s Julien Carignan-Labbe was given a game misconduct 19:29 into the third period for being an aggressor. Cape Breton’s Jordan Ty Fournier got a game misconduct at the same time for checking from behind.
SEA DOGS 4 TITAN 2
SAINT JOHN, N.B. — Matthew Highmore broke a tie game 17:52 into the third period and the Sea Dogs doubled up Acadie-Bathurst to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven first-round playoff series.
Mathieu Joseph added an insurance goal for Saint John with 44 seconds left on the clock and had an assist for a two-point outing. Thomas Chabot and Sam Povorozniouk also scored.
Christophe Boivin and Jeffrey Truchon-Viel found the back of the night for the Titan.
ISLANDERS 5 OCEANIC 4 (OT)
RIMOUSKI, Que. — Alexis Vanier scored his second of the game on a power play 12:13 into overtime as Charlottetown evened its first-round playoff series against the Oceanic at a game apiece.
Jake Coughler also scored twice for the Islanders, who lost the first game of the series Friday night. Olivier Cooper also scored and Samuel Blais had four assists.
Rimouski’s Antoine Dufor-Plante tied the game midway through the third period. Jeremie Beaudin, Dylan Montcalm, and Carson MacKinnon supplied the rest of the offence.
