Stonewall native Derek Laxdal has been named head coach of Team Canada for the Under-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament scheduled for August, Hockey Canada announced on Thursday.

Laxdal is the head coach of the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WHL, and just last month guided the club to the Memorial Cup championship in London, Ont.

This will be Laxdal's first engagement with the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence. He has guided the Oil Kings for four seasons, following stints with Wichita in the CHL and Idaho of the ECHL.

Laxdal will be assisted by Jody Hull of the OHL's Peterborough Petes and Eric Veilleux of the QMJHL's Baie-Comeau Drakkar at the tournament in Breclav, Czech Republic and Piestany, Slovakia Aug. 11-16.
