Manitoba RCMP is reminding drivers to buckle up, stay sober and stay focused on the road this Thanksgiving long weekend.
Oct. 9-12 has been designated as Operation Impact, a national enforcement campaign to aggressively enforce laws against high risk driving behaviour and remind people that an essential part of the enforcement role is to save lives and reduce injuries on roadways.
This year, 53 people have lost their lives in traffic collisions on roads under Manitoba RCMP jurisdiction and police say most of those deaths were completely preventable.
This weekend RCMP officers across the province will be conducting extra patrols targeting dangerous driving behaviours that put other road users most at risk, such as: impaired driving, speeding, talking or texting on cell phones while driving, and not using seatbelts.
Last year, there was one traffic-related death in Manitoba on roads under RCMP jurisdiction over the Thanksgiving long weekend - this year, the goal is zero deaths.
