Their latest album is called Sidelining, but Royal Canoe could soon find themselves squarely in the spotlight.

The Winnipeg-based alternative rock band, which includes members from Steinbach (guitarist Bucky Driedger), Mitchell (vocalist Matt Peters), and Kleefeld (keyboardist Matt Schellenberg), is one of 23 Manitoba contenders for a 2022 Western Canadian Music Award.

Royal Canoe was nominated in the Rock Artist of the Year category.

Award winners will be announced during the BreakOut West conference in Calgary, Alta. from Sept. 28 to Oct. 2.

The WCMAs, which are celebrating their 20th anniversary, are administered by the Western Canadian Music Alliance, a coalition of provincial music industry associations from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, and the Northwest and Yukon territories. Members of the six associations cast votes to determine award winners.

Royal Canoe was last nominated in 2020.
