The next time you drive through town, you might want to take a closer look at the speed limits, because the City of Steinbach is making a few adjustments.
Steinbach city council gave final approval to speed limit changes on local roads. This is a result of recently adopted Manitoba’s Traffic and Transportation Modernization Act, which gave municipal governments the responsibility to set speed limits.
Although the by-law was passed on Tuesday, the changes won’t be fully implemented until later this fall, according to a city report.
But certain roads are already getting new signs.
"These are generally adjustments downwards, reflecting the fact that traffic continues to increase with our population," said Councillor Michael Zwaagstra.
Zwaagstra highlighted changes to Old Tom Road and Park Road, on which speeds are being reduced from 70 km/h to 60 km/h.
Councillor Damian Penner noted Highway 52 and Highway 12, as provincial roadways, remain outside of the jurisdiction for speed changes.
