Steinbach city council voted unanimously to purchase a lot located at 340 Hanover Street to make way for the planned Southeast Event Centre.
The lot was only the latest purchase of dozens of properties bought over the last 25 years, and Mayor Earl Funk credited the foresight of past councils for starting the process in the late 1980s.
"There was just a plan to amass land in the downtown core because the council of the day knew as the city would grow they would need land eventually," he said.
Funk said "pretty much all" the lots on Elmdale and Hanover on that block have been purchased to make way for a new recreation facility.
This property was purchased for $250,000. The funds will come from the City’s Recreation Reserve Fund.
While the city continues to wait for word on provincial and federal funding, Funk said this purchase was important.
"Now we have the properties we need and the infrastructure to actually put a structure the size of the Southeast Event Centre there," he said. "This lot was crucial in the planning of the event centre.
