When Team Manitoba walks into the opening ceremonies at the Canada Summer Games on Aug. 6th, they’ll be lead by Erika Vermette.
The Morris beach volleyball player was named as Manitoba’s flag-bearer at a news conference held at the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame on July 26. The news conference officially named the 370 athletes who make up Team Manitoba, and revealed the uniforms they’ll be wearing.
“It’s such an honour to be selected to lead Team Manitoba into the opening ceremony,” Vermette said in a news release.
“This is my first Canada Games, and I am looking forward to the whole experience – on and off the court. I’ve been training for years for this opportunity and I’m excited to get back into competition coming out of the pandemic.”
Vermette is one of 23 southeast Manitobans who will be making the trip to Niagara from Aug. 6-21 to participate at the Canada Summer Games.
Nico Lepage from St Adolphe and Alanna Boudreau from Oakbank will be helping coach athletics at the games. Lepage will be joined by Joshua Suelzle, Bailey Purse and Katrina Stefaniuk, all from St Adolphe, and all named to Manitoba’s athletics roster. Also competing will be Matt Jolicoeur from Ste Anne and Alex Buler from Steinbach.
In baseball, three members of the provincial champion 18U AAA Carillon Sultans will be wearing the black and gold. Cody Gunderson (St. Malo), Anders Meilliur (St Adolphe) and Cody Wielgosh (Beausejour) were all named to Manitoba’s baseball roster.
A new sport at the games in 2022 is box lacrosse. John William Harding from Ste Anne will help coach the team, with sisters Emma-Lynne and Sidney Green from Ile des Chenes making the girls roster, and Mason Harmatiuk from Oakbank playing for the boys team.
Sophie MacDonald from Steinbach is the only cyclist from the region who will be making the trip to Niagara.
In rugby sevens, Kleefeld’s Emma Oude Voshaar will add an Eastman flair to the growing sport.
Sam Fuss was named as a tournament all-star for Steinbach Regional Secondary School at AAAA soccer provincials this year, and he was further rewarded with a slot on Team Manitoba.
In the pool, Senuth Edirisinghe is the only athlete from the region to compete in Niagra.
Vermette won’t be the only athlete from Morris in Niagara, as Katie McLachlan will hit the mat, wrestling for Team Manitoba.
Finally, the region is well represented in volleyball, as shown by Vermette’s selection as flag-bearer.
Bryan Tottle was named as a manager for the team, with Mitchell’s Nicole Hildebrand and La Broquerie’s Jordy Heppner suiting up as athletes alongside Vermette.
