The Ste. Anne Aces have won an eye-popping four straight Carillon Senior Hockey League championships.
Now, they only need seven more wins to claim their fifth straight title, following their convincing 6-2 triumph over the Steinbach Huskies Wednesday night in Ste. Anne in the opening game of the CSHL playoffs.
Brenden Walker, who has been the catalyst behind some of those past championships, paced the Aces with a three-goal performance in the win over the Huskies.
Ste. Anne opened up a 4-0 first period lead on a pair by Walker and two more from Keith Grondin, and never looked back.
With the Aces leading 6-0 in the third, the Huskies got on the board late in the frame on goals by Ryan Gardner and Braden Purtill just 30 seconds apart.
Game two in the best of seven semi-final series will be played Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Ste. Anne.
The other semi-final series also got underway last night at St. Jean as the Red River Wild downed the Grunthal Red Wings in a 4-1 final.
Travis Bosch, the leading goaltender in the league this season, stopped 34 of the 35 shots he faced to backstop the Wild to victory.
Game two in that series will be played Sunday at 6:00 p.m. at Grunthal.
