With Easter gatherings still being restricted this weekend, those hankering for a round of golf this long weekend just might be in luck.
Taking advantage of the early spring, several golf courses in the area will be opening up for the season this Easter weekend.
At Oakwood Golf Course near Ste. Anne, their official opening day is Thursday, April 1. But in fact as they often are, they’ve been open for a while already, keeping in the tradition of being one of the first courses in the area to open up for the season.
Golf in March is not that common, not unprecedented, but certainly not the norm.
The first golfers of the season were out in force at Oakwood on March 20, and had a full slate of players, about 150 a day, during the limited hours they were open on about a half a dozen days in the latter part of the month as they pushed through close to 1,000 golfers.
Monday afternoon at Oakwood, with the mercury pushing past 20 degrees and in a gale force wind, there were few if any spots remaining in the parking lot, and carts were lined up at the first tee with golfers waiting for their tee times.
One group, who drove in from Winnipeg for the early round, a trio of teachers, were all smiles as they got in their first swings of the season on the first day of Spring Break.
Three other courses in the area are planning to open up for the season on Good Friday, April 2, including La Broquerie Golf, Girouxsalem and Ridgewood golf courses, as well as the Lorette Golf Course.
Drovers Run at Niverville plans to open sometime this weekend, depending on conditions.
The Steinbach Fly-In Golf Club also hopes to open sometime during the Easter weekend. On Monday the greens staff were busy getting the course ready for play, trying to get as much done before winter returned on Tuesday.
Head pro Brian Guenther said, "It all depends on how much snow we get on Tuesday, if we get 15 cm, that might delay things a little."
In any case, in an average year, the Fly-In opens for play around the third week of April, so this golf season will be significantly earlier than the norm.
Two other golf courses in the area will have later openings, including Maplewood Golf at St. Pierre, which has set an Apr. 9 opening date.
Meanwhile, if you’re looking to get in a round at Quarry Oaks, it could be a bit of a wait as they say it could be several weeks before they open up their 27-hole layout.
