The Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League kicked off another season this past weekend and the Red River Mudbugs have picked up where they left off last spring.
Red River, who claimed the HTJHL pennant last season and then went on to capture the HTJHL championship, won both their games this weekend as the loop resumed play.
Friday night, in the season opener at Grunthal, Logan Bueckert had two goals and two assists to lead the Mudbugs to a 9-6 triumph over the Red Wings.
Then Sunday night in Steinbach, Bueckert scored another two goals and Sean Penner made 26 saves as the Mudbugs blanked the Huskies 3-0.
One night earlier at Ile des Chenes, the Huskies lost 3-2 in overtime to the Lorette Comets, with the winner coming from Derik Cooke 24 seconds into OT.
Two other games, both involving the La Broquerie Habs, back in the league after a five-year absence, saw the Habs struggle out of the gate, losing 13-1 to Springfield Saturday at Oakbank and then dropped a 10-2 decision to the Red Wings Sunday night at Grunthal.
The next game on the HTJHL schedule will be played Friday night in Steinbach as the Huskies host the Comets in a re-match of their season opener from Saturday night.
