It was a highly successful weekend for a pair of Carillon Minor Baseball Association (CMBA) teams who came away with provincial titles at provincial championships at Niverville and Hamiota this past weekend.
At Niverville, in an all-CMBA final, the Niverville Wildcats defeated the Kleefeld Stingers 10-8 in to claim the Baseball Manitoba 11U ‘A’ provincial title.
And at Hamiota, the La Broquerie A’s crushed the Brandon Giants 15-3 in the final to win the Baseball Manitoba 13U ‘A’ provincial crown in convincing fashion.
For the Wildcats, winning the provincial title as the host team in Niverville, made it a little extra special.
The 12-team tournament, played in perfect conditions at Hespeler Park, saw the teams divided into three pools of four. Niverville, after losing 5-3 to the Carberry Royals in their opening game of the tournament Friday morning bounced back and did not lose another game in the tournament. Carberry went on to finish first in the pool with a perfect 3-0 record while the Wildcats finished second in the pool as they rallied to beat Portage 14-4 and then Dauphin 14-6 after that opening defeat.
Niverville doubled Brandon 14-7 in their first playoff game, then crushed Carberry 14-0 in the semis. Meanwhile, the other two Carillon teams were also very much alive and they squared off in the other semi-final as Kleefeld edged La Broquerie 3-1 to advance to the final.
At Hamiota, the A’s were dominant going through the weekend to win the provincial title, rolling through the competition with six straight victories.
