One person was taken to hospital in unstable condition after an early morning fire in the William Whyte neighbourhood Thursday.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were sent to a duplex on the 600 block of Alfred Avenue just before 4 a.m. and declared the fire under control just after 5 a.m.

Residents had evacuated the house before crews arrived.

Firefighters found two cats, one of which was dead, during a search of the building.
