RCMP lay manslaughter charge in 2016 infant slaying
RCMP have laid a manslaughter charge after a Sioux Valley Dakota Nation infant was slain seven years ago.
Virden RCMP were called to a home on the First Nation about an infant in medical distress on Jan. 4, 2016. The two-month-old girl was taken to hospital in critical condition and died weeks later on Jan. 23. Her death was deemed a homicide.
Major crimes officers began investigating, and in April 2022, received new information that “advanced the investigation” and led to charges being approved.
On Monday, Keifer Mecas, 32, of Brandon, was charged with manslaughter. He was released for a March 6 court appearance in Brandon.
