City police have a suspect in custody after money was stolen from a West End church Sunday night.

Police responded to an alarm at the church, located on the 1000 block of Ellice Avenue, at about 10:30 p.m. They found a basement window had been broken and a donation box damaged inside, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Monday.

Investigators learned a suspect ran away shortly before they arrived. A police helicopter and canine unit were dispatched to help track the suspect, who was located on the 900 block of Dominion Street about an hour later, the WPS said.

Officers arrested Nicholas Richard Grandbois, 44, and seized cash from him, police said. He is charged with break-and-enter and theft. Grandbois also had an existing warrant for failing to attend court, the WPS said.
