King Charles III crowned with regal pomp, cheers and shrugs

Danica Kirka And Jill Lawless, The Associated Press 6 minute read Updated: 2:35 PM CDT

LONDON (AP) — King Charles III was crowned Saturday at Westminster Abbey, in a ceremony steeped in ancient ritual and brimming with bling at a time when the monarchy is striving to remain relevant in a fractured modern Britain.

At a coronation with displays of royal power straight out of the Middle Ages, Charles was given an orb, a sword and scepter and had the solid gold, bejeweled St. Edward’s Crown placed atop his head as he sat upon a 700-year-old oak chair.

In front of world leaders, foreign royals, dignitaries and a smattering of stars, the monarch declared, “I come not to be served but to serve,” and was presented as Britain’s “undoubted king."

Inside the medieval abbey, trumpets sounded, and the congregation of more than 2,000 shouted “God save the king!" Outside, thousands of troops, hundreds of thousands of spectators and scores of protesters converged.

Alberta declares state of emergency over wildfires

The Canadian Press 4 minute read Updated: 9:10 PM CDT

CALGARY - Alberta declared a state of emergency Saturday due to the growing threat of wildfires that have forced more than 24,000 people from their homes.

Premier Danielle Smith said the safety of Albertans is a priority, and the emergency status gives the government greater power to access emergency funds and mobilize additional support.

"This is not a step that we took lightly," Smith told a news conference following a meeting of her emergency management cabinet committee. "But it's one that will allow the quickest and most effective response."

More than a dozen communities and rural areas have been evacuated in recent days. Officials said there were 110 wildfires burning in the province, with about three dozen considered out of control, as of late Saturday afternoon.

The sounds of prayer, reverence and song reverberated through St. John’s Anglican Cathedral Saturday afternoon, as more than 200 people gathered beneath the vaulted ceilings and stained-glass windows to join the Commonwealth in honouring King Charles III on the day of his coronation.

“King Charles has a long relationship with Canada… He has witnessed decades of Canada’s social economic cultural and constitutional change,” Manitoba Lt.-Gov. Anita Neville said, addressing the crowd of parishioners, monarchists and Indigenous and religious leaders.

“We have the good fortune to live in a nation that embraces our evolving identity while maintaining our connection to history.”

Neville, who became Manitoba’s viceregal in October, met Charles for the first time last week, when she visited the King at Buckingham Palace. She described the experience as “surreal.”

Government still has questions about Chong threats

OTTAWA - The government is still investigating why warnings that a Conservative member of Parliament was being threatened by the Chinese government never made it to the desk of any cabinet minister, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino said Saturday.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Liberal policy convention in Ottawa, he said the possibility of holding someone accountable for that decision remains "under consideration."

"It's important that we unearth their reasons as to why this was not brought directly to the attention of the public safety minister at the time, as well as the prime minister because we take these issues seriously," he said.

The government has now made clear to the Canadian Security Intelligence Service that any intelligence related to parliamentarians must be passed on to both the prime minister and the minister of public safety, regardless of how confident the spy agency is in the information.

Widening roadway, adding active transportation part of $550-million Route 90 upgrade

A long-awaited proposal to improve a notorious Route 90 bottleneck would widen the street to offer three traffic lanes in each direction, install active transportation pathways on both sides and update aging infrastructure.

The overhaul of the busy route, between Taylor and Ness avenues, was identified as a strategic infrastructure priority for council in 2011, partly because there are few other alternative routes nearby.

On each weekday, more than 40,000 vehicles pass through this section of Route 90, with travel times ranging from about seven to eight minutes during peak periods in both directions. If nothing changes along the route, travel time is expected to grow to nearly 14 minutes (morning rush) and 10.7 minutes (afternoon rush) for northbound traffic by 2041, while reaching 8.5 minutes (morning) and 10.8 minutes (afternoon) for vehicles heading southbound the same year, public consultation documents state.

With the improvements, city staff predicts travel times would range from roughly seven to nine minutes, preventing delays from roughly doubling in some cases as the population grows.

Other Canadian cities more successful at reducing bike theft

Jen Sjodin never expected to be sending her 13-year-old son pedalling down a criminal path.

But the Winnipeg mom was out of luck when it came to retrieving his $400 bike with the help of city police, so she and her husband took matters into their own hands, and their son Dawson’s legs.

He’d saved for months to buy the grey and neon-green Giant Talon last fall. Not long after getting his new wheels, he rode to the Walmart on Taylor Avenue and locked his bike to the rack near the front doors. He was in and out of the store in about 15 minutes, and found his cable lock cut. The bike was gone.

Sjodin filed a police report with the Winnipeg Police Service, posted a notice on Facebook and scoured online classified ads in hopes of finding the bike. Six days later, Dawson spotted it on Kijiji.

Premier grilled about 10 per cent PST claim

Carol Sanders 4 minute read Yesterday at 6:12 PM CDT

Premier Heather Stefanson had some explaining to do over her repeated claim the NDP, if elected in the fall, would raise the provincial sales tax to 10 per cent.

“I’m not making anything up,” the Progressive Conservative leader said as she answered reporters’ questions Friday after speaking at the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce economic summit.

“How are they planning to pay for all their increases in social services, in health care and all their increases in expenditure?” she said when asked about the source of her claim that an NDP government would hike the PST by three percentage points.

“In the past, what they’ve done is they’ve used the PST to do that.”
