A North End church congregation is putting the finishing touches on its very own, modern-day stairway to heaven.
The Atlantic-Garden City United Church, located at 725 Atlantic Ave., has undertaken approximately $250,000 in elevator and façade improvements and will be hosting an official opening event on Sun., Jan. 29 at noon.
Minister Mary Best said the project has been five years in the making and has relied on grant support and fundraising for funding. She said the church’s staircase has become a bit of a problem in recent years and congregation members are concerned about accessibility.
She said the congregation, composed of approximately 125 families from the North End with members hailing from as far away as Elmwood and Charleswood, sees completion of the project as early anniversary present for the church, which celebrates its 85th anniversary later this year.
Best says the church holds the distinction of being the first built in Winnipeg for the purpose of being and United Church.
“This is the first building built in Winnipeg to be a United Church. We are updating a unique piece of history,” said Best.
