Hey there, time traveller!

We’ve all done it before. It has been used to settle a dispute on playgrounds and in offices all over the world and now you have the chance to win some cold, hard cash off it.

In fact, the common playground game of rock, paper, scissors will be an all-out battle of wits and just a plain good ol’ time when Handemonium 2014 rocks the University of Manitoba on May 27 with a grand prize package worth $1,500.

The event has partnered with CancerCare Manitoba, specifically with CancerCare’s colon cancer initiatives — with 100 per cent of funds raised going straight to CancerCare — and will be the largest event of its kind in Canada.

“I lost my father to colon cancer, it’s been about 20 years now,” event organizer Jeff Wall said.

“It doesn’t really go away, so this is my own kind of homage. I came up with this and it is a little different than most, I wanted something that was a little unique and open to everybody.”

The event itself will be flanked by a variety of exciting mini-tournaments, live music, beer, and pizza for participants.

“There will be 20 booths with the popular game show Minute to Win It being played at each of them,” Wall said. “There will also be side tables to play rock, paper, scissors where people can pay five bucks and play to win gift certificates from one of our sponsors.”

The Handemonium tournament is broken down into three “weight” classes, none of which have anything to do with weight.

You qualify based on the donations you raise by getting pledges. People can pledge you, or your team. So it doesn’t matter if you’re 50 pounds or 250 pounds, you could still take home the heavyweight title.

“It engages people to raise money, it gives them motivation — a friendly kind of poke,” said Wall, who jokes, “You don’t want to be a lightweight.”

Interested parties are encouraged to enter a team and get their workplace, sports teams, friends and families involved in the event, which will take place at University Centre at the University of Manitoba Fort Garry campus.

“There is a $500 prize package for whatever team raises the most money,” says Wall. “The event itself is just a lot of fun, it’s for a good cause and it is different.”
