New volleyball coach settles in at RRC

A new face has spiked his way into the Red River College athletics department.
Dan McGregor is the new head coach of the Red River Rebels women’s volleyball team. His contract with the college starts at the beginning of July.
“We are excited to welcome Dan to the Rebels athletic program,” Shane Ray, manager of RRC’s athletics and recreation services, said in a release. “His proven success at the club, provincial and post-secondary level will be an asset to the program here at Red River College.”
McGregor said he thought coaching for a college team would be a good experience.
McGregor is an Oak Park High School grad. He went on to the University of Manitoba to get his bachelor of commerce degree with honours. However, McGregor returned to Oak Park (820 Charleswood Rd.) to coach volleyball to both junior varsity and varsity girls’ teams from 1997 to 2008. He also coached at Dakota Collegiate (661 Dakota St.) in 2013.
Outside of high school coaching, McGregor is also the head coach of the provincial U16 volleyball teams.
“It’s been pretty good,” McGregor, a father of a three-year-old and a three-month-old, said. “It’s pretty interesting to play against different provinces.”
Once McGregor settles into his new job position, he plans to foster a positive environment among his athletes — no matter the outcome of the game.
“One of the things I’m trying to promote (is) a positive environment,” McGregor said. “Players are there because they want to play, not because they’re (being) forced to. They want to do well because they want to succeed, (not because they) fear I’m going to yell at them. I’d try to create that environment.”
Volleyball season starts at the beginning of September. Tryouts take place in the north gym of the college’s Notre Dame campus (2055 Notre Dame Ave.) on Sept. 4 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
