The experience of canoeing down one of Winnipeg’s riverways is now accessible to anyone willing to try thanks to the ingenious idea of Ray Myers, owner of Winnipeg Canoe Rentals at 10 Keenleyside St (also home of Heartland Archery).
“We make it really easy for you, all you have to do is show up and we will take care of the rest,” Myers said of taking care of the daunting tasks people are normally faced with when planning a canoe trip.
“It is natural for us, (so) if you are alone or want to bring 80 co-workers we take care of the logistical details and shuttle all the equipment.”
Winnipeg Canoe Rentals offers self-guided group canoe trips down Winnipeg’s waterways.
All those taking part have to do is step into the canoes at the beginning of the excursion and step out at the end. Such an outing can become a great idea for sports teams, youth groups or workplace excursions.
Staff member Kelli Block explained to me about the family experiences the business provides.
“It is fun to see people smiling as they get out of the water,” she said. “Kids love to try things and they find it really neat once they get on the water and experience something new.”
Ray showed me one canoe that was 36 feet long.
“This is a great one that we do a lot of our tours with because it can hold eight people — four couples or two families. For a birthday party, you can all be in the same canoe,” he said.
Since trips all gowith the current, even larger canoes will move with relative ease.
In a city full of articulated waterways, Winnipeg Canoe Rentals offers a new way to access them and to feel a part of the city in a different fashion.
“(That’s) exactly the season to do it,” Myers said. “And you have a choice of routes!”
