If you’re wrestling for something to do this weekend, you could check out the Mighty Midgets.
Competitors from Canadian Wrestling’s Elite (CWE) are halfway through an 11-day Manitoba tour and the final five days of events, which run until Sun., July 27, are dubbed the Little People, Big World Tour.
Organizers say the Little People, Big World Tour, headlined by midget wrestling legend Short Sleeve Samson and Canadian wrestling legend Mike Hammer — also known as the “Mighty Midgets” — will make a stop in the city on Fri., July 25 at Holy Cross Gym (290 Dubuc St.) in St. Boniface. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and bell time is 7 p.m.
Winnipeg-based event organizer Danny Warren, 27, who been promoting wrestling on a full time basis six years and has been involved with the sport in some capacity since he was 12, said the event offers something unique for sports fans.
“We have been operating events and developing a strong following throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan and northwest Ontario for nearly six years now. All of these events have featured the very best unsigned professional wrestlers on the North American independent circuit,” Warren said.
“We’ve had dozens and dozens of former WWE TV stars appear at our events, but never the old age wrestling attraction of midget wrestling, so it is something unique and different and a form of entertainment that is very rare in this day and age. It is all mixed in with wonderful action people have become accustomed to seeing.”
And for any individuals who have not attended a wrestling event before, Warren said the upcoming event in St. Boniface is a great opportunity to get a taste of what it’s all about.
“You only live once, so get out and enjoy something out of your comfort zone. You’ll be pleasantly surprised and asking yourself why you haven’t come sooner. It is such an amazing blend of athleticism, theatrics, drama, and storytelling that you won’t find a genre of entertainment on this planet like it,” Warren said.
“In this day and age, people think they have their mind made up and either like or dislike professional wrestling. Canadian Wrestling’s Elite has made it a recurring trend to turn those who dislike professional wrestling into believers after seeing it live.”
Warren noted the Holy Cross Gym has been the stable’s home base since 2013 is “the perfect fit and creates the perfect atmosphere for the live event and the television we shoot there for our weekly broadcast.”
“The people in the neighbourhood and surrounding community continue to support CWE and help it grow more and more each day, so we will continue to hold our regular events in the St. Boniface area,” he said.
Tickets for the event are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. Advance tickets are available at Rudy’s Video (668 Sheppard St.), Blade Hair Design (3-1341 Henderson Hwy.) and Video 1001 (576 Mountain Ave.). Or online at diyobo.com
