Tec Voc High School is $14,200 richer.
The school, located at 1555 Wall St., is one of nine Canadian recipients of a Future Generation Tech Lab Grant presented by Future Shop. Tec Voc received $14,200 of the $150,000 distributed among the nine schools. According to Future Shop’s website, “Future Generation Tech Lab Grants provide necessary funding for secondary schools looking to upgrade or introduce new technology into a specific program or classroom primarily used by students in (Grades 9 to 12). The goal is to inspire and empower students to achieve their highest potential.”
Tec Voc business teacher Kathleen Mira explained the grant money will go towards buying state-of-the-art laptops, a colour printer, and a projector for a 65-year-old classroom.
“(It’s a) wooden wall classroom, and there’s no infrastructure in there to put in a lab,” Mira said. “I’m big on infusing technology in the curriculum. I just started in this position in November. I always had a nice computer lab to work with, so coming to a classroom with nothing was quite an adjustment,” she added with a laugh.
Mira put together a write-up to answer three questions as part of the application process. She answered why her class would benefit from this grant, what role technology plays in her program, and how the technology will inspire and motivate students. She said she also provided an accompanying video featuring some of the students.
“We kind of said, ‘Empower me’ and then said what we wanted to be when we grew up,” Jamie Walters, 16, said. “I said I wanted to be a public relations person.”
“I said I wanted to be an accountant and work in the business field,” another student, 17-year-old Jessica Perez, said.
Mira said the equipment for the classroom is in the process of being ordered, and she’s hoping to have everything by next month.
“We are pretty excited about it,” Mira said.
