Anyone who has an anxious pet knows a trip to the vet can be stressful, for both the pet and the pet owner. A call to Animal Ark Veterinary Services can solve the problem.
Dr. Lisa Sawka, veterinarian and owner of Animal Ark, has been providing house call veterinary care to clients in Charleswood and throughout Winnipeg for the past eight years. She is licensed for small animal house calls by the Manitoba Veterinary Board, and provides medical care to cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, and birds. Sawka can diagnose and treat medical illness, provide minor injury care, and she can even do blood tests. If surgery is required, she refers pet owners to a clinic.
A practising veterinarian for the past 20 years, Sawka started Animal Ark in 2007. She came up with the idea while working at the Winnipeg Humane Society.
“It occurred to me that having a veterinarian come to your home would be much more convenient,” she says. “I had young children myself at the time so I knew how difficult it can be to get pets to an appointment.”
House calls are beneficial for older pets, and their owners.
“Pet owners may find it hard to get their pets to an office appointment,” she says, adding that in-home visits are especially beneficial for multi-pet households as they need only one appointment.
People who work also find it more convenient to arrange a home visit, Sawka says.
“Most people are so busy it’s hard for them to get to a clinic during normal offices hours. I can work around their schedule.”
Behavioural issues can also be dealt with more effectively with a house call, she says.
“If you can observe the animal in its own environment, you can often see the source of the problem.”
Sometimes pets have to go to a clinic to receive medical care, Sawka points out but if they can be treated at home, their anxiety levels are reduced considerably. When euthanasia is the only option, it is less stressful for the animal when the procedure is performed at home, she adds.
