One River East Collegiate grad from East St. Paul is getting a little help with his higher education from a local family business.
Micheal Reimer, 18, is the 2015 recipient of the Julius Fahr Scholarship. The $400 prize will help cover costs of his classes at Red River College in the fall.
“It really, really helps,” Reimer said. “Right now I’ve been pretty tight on money. This can help with paying for classes.”
Reimer excelled in the music program at River East, performing in the jazz orchestra, the jazz band, vocal choir and vocal jazz. While he had been accepted to Brandon University’s music program, he decided instead to stay closer to home.
“I had kind of rushed into it,” Reimer admitted. Instead, he plans to get into plumbing.
“I’m just going to kind of let that take me where I need to go,” Reimer said. “No matter where I go I know I’m going to build off of it.”
Johnathan Fahr, VP of operations with the Fahr Group, said that the Julius Fahr Scholarship was started nine years ago to honour the memory of the family patriarch and the founder of the family business.
“He was a school teacher back in Germany,” Fahr said, adding that his grandfather was something of an academic, and could speak and write six different languages.
A River East Collegiate grad himself, Fahr felt the school was a natural fit for the scholarship. The recipient is chosen based on academic achievement. Fahr added that it is usually given to a student from East St. Paul, or a student studying business.
