Started by five women who wanted a Sunday school for their children in the 1950s, St. Norbert United Church was dedicated on Nov. 14, 1965 at 3309 Pembina Hwy.

Families extending from the University of Manitoba to Glenlea were founding members of the congregation.

By 1975, they had outgrown the little white church and began meeting in St. Norbert School and then Dalhousie School in Fort Richmond.  In 1976 the current property at 933 Summerside Ave. was purchased and construction of a new church was begun. The St. Norbert United name seemed misleading given the new location, so the congregation voted on a new  name and Trinity was chosen, reflecting the three areas served at that time — St. Norbert, Fort Richmond and Waverley Heights.

The Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd began sharing the building in Sept. 2012, an arrangement which has manifested itself in several mutually supported community projects. The church has an active and ongoing presence in the community such as:

•  Sponsorship of refugee families;

•  Providing 49 individual garden plots for low-income and new Canadian families to grow their own produce and become part of the community;

•  Feeding breakfast to Fort Richmond Collegiate students during exams in January and June;

•  Creating a welcoming facility for diverse community groups: Southside Seniors; Sparks and Guides; Healthy Start;  and Richmond Kings Nursery School, to name just a few.

Trinity United’s 50th celebration weekend is Sept. 18 to 20.

On Fri., Sept. 18,  from 7 to 9 p.m., a reunion and coffee house will be at 933 Summerside Ave., with displays of memorabilia.

A celebration dinner will be held Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn South, 1330 Pembina Hwy.

Tickets are $50 for adults and $20 for children.

To reserve tickets, email anniv.tuc@mymts.net or call Marilyn at 204-269-0512.

The church will hold its celebration service on Sept. 20 at 10:45 a.m. For more information, visit
